Holidays
The students understand the origins of customs, holidays, and celebrations. They are expected to describe the origins of customs, holidays, and celebrations of the community, state, and nation such as San Jacinto Day, Independence Day, and Veterans Day; and etc. They compare the observance of holidays and celebrations from the past and the present.
The students also learn cultural awareness. They learn and understands the importance of family and community beliefs, customs, language, and traditions. They are expected to describe and explain the importance of various beliefs, customs, language, and traditions of families and communities; and explain the way folktales and legends such as Aesop's fables reflect beliefs, customs, language, and traditions of communities.
We will be learning more in the coming month about holidays that are celebrated in December. The first grade teachers are planning a rotation in which each class will rotate once to every teacher. I will teach about the Posada and read the Legend of the Poinsettia and make a craft with all the classes in first grade. Mrs. Sharpe will teach more about the Native Americans. Ms. Wallace will have a parent come in and teach about the Jewish holidays. I do believe that Ms. Leu will teach us more about Kwanza. More to come, I will keep you posted.
