Spelling Words/Sight Words
First Nine Weeks:
We will not have spelling test until the eighth week of school. We will be learning how to spell them during center rotations.
The words of the week are from the first grade curriculum word list that is taught. Scientific Spelling is a guide to teach the pattern or rule. multi-sensory approach to teach spelling.
Week #2: to, in, is, you, man, can, ran, pan
Week #3: that, it, he, was, map, cap, nap, tap
Week #4: for, on, are, as, back, sack, black, snack
Week #5: with, his, they, I, sit, hit, bit, fit
Week #6: at, be, this, have, big, pig, dig, wig

We will focusing on words with the short ( i) sound. ( in, it, tip pit,pin, nip, sit, tint, spin, spit, snip, stint)
Week #9: Phonology practice (p) sound. The (p) sound in the initial, medial and final position. (pan, pat, past, pants, spin, span, spit, spat, tap, nap sap, sip)

Week #12: Phonology practice (s) sound. (sit, sip, sin, grocer, decide, recent, lucid, cross, grass, less, fuss, class)
Rules:
Week #13: Short (a) and (z)=s sound. ( at, an, ant, asp, apt, sad, sap, snap, past, fan, tan, pant)
Rule:
Week #14: (d)=d sound. ( dip, sad, hand, slid, sand, dig, peeled, filmed, banged, lad, pad, and)
Rule:
Week #15: (f)=F sound. ( fit, fin, fat, fan, fist, flap, sift, lift, raft, daft,flint, flat)
Rule:
Week #16: (l)=l and the Floss rule. (Sniff, staff, stiff, fill,, dress, regress, hiss, confess, kiss, miss, ill, pill)
The floss rule: If a one syllable base word ends in a final (f), (l), or(s) immediately after a short vowel. The f sound is spelled ff, the l sound is spelled ll, and the s sound is spelled ss.
Week #17: (h)=h. (his, has, had, hip, hit, hint, hat, hand, hid,hag, hilt, hasp)
The h sound in the initial or medial position= h. (like in house)
Week #11: Phonology practice (n) sound. (nip, snip, tint, stint, in, pin, tin, tan, pan, pen, hen, plan)
Week #12: Phonology practice (s) sound. (sit, sip, sin, grocer, decide, recent, lucid, cross, grass, less, fuss, class)
Rules:
- The s sound in the initial positions is s.
- The s sound in the medial position before and after a consonant=s.
- The s sound in a multisyllabic base word after a vowel and before an e ,i, or y,=c (like in reception)
- The s sound in the final position of a base word after an accented short vowel= ss (like discuss)
Week #13: Short (a) and (z)=s sound. ( at, an, ant, asp, apt, sad, sap, snap, past, fan, tan, pant)
Rule:
- The short a sound in the initial and medial position=a. ( like In apple)
Week #14: (d)=d sound. ( dip, sad, hand, slid, sand, dig, peeled, filmed, banged, lad, pad, and)
Rule:
- The d sound in the initial, medial, or final position of a base word =d. ( like dog)
- The d sound after a base word = suffix ed (smelled).
Week #15: (f)=F sound. ( fit, fin, fat, fan, fist, flap, sift, lift, raft, daft,flint, flat)
Rule:
- The f sound in the initial, medial or final position=f (Like fish).
