Student Work
Students have been studying character traits during our read alouds. We generate discussions and make connections to self, world and texts. We also made personal connections with some of the characters. The students had to generate a list of traits they felt they had. Once they completed their list, the students used technology by typing their traits and choosing a font and color. The traits were printed and cut out and glued to their hanger that was covered with white butcher paper. The pictures of their face were laminated and applied to the hanger to make mini character bodies. They did a fantastic job!
The Kissing Hand
The Kissing Hand Raccoon Activity was done on the first day of school. I read the book The Kissing Hand to the children on the first day of school. We generated a discussions, made personal connections of our feelings and generated an anchor chart. Sentence stems were created with each student's response. The students then wrote their sentence with their own feelings. The raccoon face and tail were precut and students assembled the raccoon and drew their face and tail and glued google eyes and you just can't go wrong with google eyes. I purchased precut hands and heart stickers so the children reproduce the sign for I Love you and placed a heart in the center of their hand to tell parents that they love their parents. Modeled writing is a way to demonstrate to students how to make complete sentences by writing complete thoughts, capitalizing the beginning of a sentence and applying punctuation. It was a fun writing activity and craft to construct on the first day of school.
Math Investigations with Pattern Blocks
Students had an opportunity to explore and create a design using 25 pattern blocks. Once they created a design they were to fill in the chart with the number of pattern blocks they used of each shape to create their design. Once they completed their design they took pictures of their design with a digital camera. These are only a few of the designs to show you some of the activities we do know during center time.
Eaten Apples
At the end of the first day of school, we generated a discussion of how we felt school went. We generated an anchor chart with all the dictated answers from the students. They made a list of their own feelings about how they felt school went. This was done after we read the First Day Jitters. We love making personal connections.
Johnny Appleseed
We read multiple books about Johnny Appleseed. We made personal connection of things we have planted, We discussed attributes of apples, our favorite apples, and we developed an anchor chart. The anchor chart included nouns and adjectives, and verbs. With this anchor chart, students were able to generate their Cinquain poems. See the pictures of the poems that the children wrote.
