Reader's Theater
Reader's Theater is a way to help students integrate reading, listening and speaking activities. Students read aloud, they perform and work collaboratively. It doesn't require costumes, prompts or memorization. It is a way to practice reading by using voice and expressions and leaving the rest to your imagination. There are so many benefits to participating in Reader's Theater. It helps with fluency, it engages students, it builds their confidence, it provides a purpose why we are doing this performance and most of all it gives children an opportunity to work collaboratively.
I love reader's theater! This year I had an opportunity with the help of a wonderful parent (Emily) who assisted with costumes for my boys. The girls wore a black outfit and multicolored coin scarfs. I can't thank the parents enough for buying the scarfs. It made the performance so colorful and exciting. It was an amazing performance! Our theme was Fairy Tales but I like to incorporate a little multicultural learning of music and dance.
The children sang Hello to All the children of the World. The scripts were:
We ended our program with our Dance routine to the song Waka Waka by Shakira and Belly Danza by Don Omar. The boys and girls danced to Waka Waka. The music was shortened with the help of our music Teacher. The boys also drummed to the music Belly Danza while the girls danced on Stage. After our finale, we met parents in the classroom for breakfast, coffee and juice. The children were honored with flowers from the Mika family. What a day it was. I still have children from other classrooms and parents say they heard it was wonderful.
Thank you parents for making this all happen with contributions, food, support, and your presence. You made your child very happy! :) I was so busy I didn't have an opportunity to take pictures at the performance. I hope others will send them to me so I can post them. Thank You!
Sincerely

We started practicing in the classroom and towards the end we practiced on stage. Students had to also practice being a good audience while the other were performing. It is hard being a good audience and trying to stay as quiet as a mouse. We did it!
