Students Working Independently
Students are taught expectations at the beginning of the school year so that students are able to work independently. During Independent work time. They are working on reading, writing and spelling skills. They are given opportunities to practice the skills that I teach during whole group instruction while I am working in small group guided instruction.
Reading consists of :
Writing involves anything from:
The children are given multiple opportunities to practice their writing skills after we have had mini lessons on grammar. We have been learning about nouns, verbs, punctuation, how to change the spelling of words by learning their rules and the children are given time for creativity. We hope that with practice and direct teaching they will improve their writing skills and penmanship. They are writing expository, personal narratives and we will continue to teach other styles. I just want them to love to read and writing.
More Info to follow it is still under construction. I will post pictures later this week.
Reading consists of :
- Guided Reading which is lead by the teacher. The teacher Scaffolds the reader by using effective strategies for pre-, during, and after reading, such as: previewing the text , reading for a purpose, make predictions and connections, think alouds , and we use graphic organizers that support all our students, and not just struggling readers.
- Silent Reading where the student reads to himelf/herself.
- Buddy Reading- The student reads with someone. They take turns share the reading time.
- Electronic Reading- The stories are read to them electronically. Tumblebooks.com or Starfall.com
Writing involves anything from:
- writing prompts
- Journal writing
- Word Wall Word Sentences
- 5 star sentences (Sentences must be at least 5 words in length, make sense, begin with a capital letter at the beginning and a punctuation at the end.)
- Thematic Writing
- The list is endless because you have to be creative to come up with writing opportunities.
