Classroom Design
It's only been a few days since school is out and I have already made sketches of how I want my classroom to look like. I am trying to declutter my classroom closets this year. I am by no means an expert but I do love watching designing shows and I have an eye for space and color. I can't wait to get back so I can set up my class. I started making a few changes last year such as:
- I used cloth instead of paper on the bulletin boards.
- I used double borders to give a more dramatic look.
- My shelves cover my dry erase board so I am looking forward to having new shelves that our generous PTA purchased for my class.
- I am really looking for a new way to post a word wall because I don't have a lot of wall space. I'll keep searching.
This is an elementary sketch of my south wall that I have planned for the upcoming year. The cubicle shelves that are labeled with the months of the year are for my lessons. I read these books to the children for each month. I have two more shelves that will be my class library however, I have separated them so kids won't crowd each other. I am also going to turn my kid's cubbies on it's side and add some cushions to serve as a reading bench by the tree. Students will also have an opportunity to sit on the rug with pillows to read with comfort too.
My classroom is not very large. However, you can see my innovation station by the door. I don't know how I can teach without it anymore. Calendar and math tubs will be on the west wall. I will have another rug by this wall so students will have the opportunity to play math games in this area. Then, I place a small table to serve as a writing station with a desk to the north of it. It will be stocked with different types of writing paper, personal word walls and dictionaries. My desk will be behind the shelf. Not to worry, I never sit at my desk.
My Floor Plan
My north wall is a wall of doors for my closets from one end of the class to the other. The rectangle/square shapes are bulletin boards. They are too narrow so I thought I might turn them into windows and make curtains and take pictures of the kids looking out of the windows. I am still debating with myself on what else to do with them. I have time to think about it.
My wall of windows. File cabinet and computer station divided by two shelves that have all my readers for guided reading. Then my Science stations is in front of my AC unit. During the summer, this is how I begin my year so that I make the class inviting. I never set up the classroom the same. I feel it's a new year with new inspirations.
Still under construction. I will post pictures after I set it up.
